Does anyone know someone who has done their family medicine residency in USA and then gone back to India? If yes, were they able to get good jobs there?

What are the prospects for Family medicine in India ?. Is it just considered equivalent to MBBS ?

hey suraj
Listen family Medicine specialist in India will mostly work as Private Practitioners. and I think they will be in demand more than MD medicine. As U will be able to treat everything from A small child to an old adult. Its the beauty of this field. So relax, pal.Just get matched and let the rest of life catch up with you.(Moreover U will be writing just MD Medicine on ur billboard in India, so nobody will be asking u whether its family or chill cool )

The scene is dismal in family medicine in India...u have to work 24X7, compete with unqualified quacks..and also ayurvedic/unani/homeopaths. electropaths/godknowswhatpaths who practice allopathic medicine..the law against them is slack...

You get paid less per u have to have bulk practice..see more than 100 patients a day to earn a decent living.

Most people are into unethical practice..taking cuts and commisions for pts referred to consultants and investigations.. some demanding more than 40 % of the total bill.. Would u prefer to be like them???? I would not do it.

In short ...not a very fulfilling profession as a family practitioner...and u definately dont need to be an MD for that in India.

But if u are aiming at a job..then with a FM MD ..not much of hope to get attachment/admitting priviledges in any renowned hospital.

If u want to consult as an internist in small scale hospitals..10 to 20 bedded small privately owned centers..( we call them nursring homes here..quite different from the nursing homes in US)..with an US ..FM-MD...that is possible.

So if u are doing family medicine...coming back to India does not seem to be a great proposition.
