What drugs prolong the QT interval?

add to that tricyclic antidepressants, cispride, thioridazine, and believe it or not erythromycin.

So, what happens when you prolong the QT interval?

Torsades de pointes


and u correct it by:

1. Discontinue the drugs
2. give magnesium
4.shorten the AP duration by giving isoprotenalol
or electrical pacing...

i don't think erythromycin alone will cause QT prolungation. usually it can do that in combination with another drug with that same side effect!

fluroquinolones also prolong the QT interval

Why is Torsades de pointes called so?

tosade de pointes = twisting of points.. describes the appearance of the ECG as it "twists"
