i recently approached the indian embassy for a statement of need for my j1 visa. the embassy told me that they only do renewals and do not issues statement of need for new applicants? does it mean that students who are here on f1 visa need to go back to india just for this? has anybody else encountered the same problem? please help . i called up the consulate in new york too and they said that the embassy in washington has told them that this is the case. is this a new rule? i know that most f1 students got their statement of need from the embassy and besides when i contacted ecfmg they told me to approach the embassy. in total confusion. what about other countries.....do u all have to go back to ur home country to get the statemnet of need. that seem slike such a hassle for one statement of need.
