Hi,

Does anyone know if you suspect the patient has an STD and asks if she/he has to tell their partner, what do you say? Is the patient obligated to tell? If patient does not want to tell are you supposed to convince the patient to tell? Are STDs reportable?

In case of suspected HIV same thing. Do you have to tell the patient that they have to tell the partners?

thanks very much

I think if you suspect , then tell the patient so, but it is not until after you confirm it, so tell the patient you will do some tests and discuss the definitive diagnosis later on.

Unless you have a confirmed case of a STD then you go ahead and tell the patient that he/she has to contact his/her sexual partners so they receive treatment and care or that if he/she prefers you to do so. Be very nice and dont be shocked by anything they may tell you. MOst important of all be very supportive -this is a way he/she may find out his/her partner is cheating so be cautious in how to tell the patient, be honest, look at his/her eyes. Remember for HIV testing you need consent. Tell your patient also, that you need to report to the health system about his/her STD but that everything is kept confidential. Counsel about use of condoms.

hope this helps

Thank you Lorena. Yes it helps. So if a confirmed case of STD/HIV, then patient has to tell partner. And consent is needed for HIV testing. thankssmiling face

you can counsel like this -

ms smith, i understand that you might have acquired an infection from your boyfriend in the course of your relationship and it would be helpful to bring your boyfriend with you for evaluation so that he may be examined and treated for the same infection, if he has it. this would help both of you in the long run and will protect you from getting repeated episodes of the same infection in the future.

we would also like to test you and your boyfriend for possibility of having acquired HIV infection and will do so at the next visit, if you agree for the testing.

since HIV transmission can be reduced to a great extent by the use of condoms, so i would suggest that you should use condoms regularly during intercourse, especially if you have had intercourse with multiple partners.

so just talk it over with your boyfriend and it would be great if you could bring him with you at the next visit for evaluation and testing.

finally we will perform a few tests on you to rule out the presence of any sexually transmitted diseases and will act accordingly as the results become available.

THIS APPROACH COMBINES BOTH COUNSELLING AND PROVIDING PATIENT FOR A FRAMEWORK FOR THE NEXT VISIT.

THIS WAS SELF-MADE. ANY COMMENTS TO IMPROVE IT FURTHER WOULD BE WELCOME....

Don't always assume is the boyfriend that gave the disease. What if she was the one cheating?
