45 year old women has an acute cornary occlusion. Within seconds the ischemic regoin shows mitochondrial swelling and depletion of glycogen granules. Which of the following metabolic events is the most likely cause of these cellular changes ?

A.INflux of Na
B.Efflux of K
C.ATP depletion
D.Accumulation of free fatty acid
E.Degradation of membran phospholipids

C.ATP depletion

I agree with ssrpk..... 8)

hi
can u please explain why cell swells as ATP depletes.
i was thinking that it was Na influx

As ATP deplete it leads to---dec: Na-K atpase----influx of Na & efflux of K------cell swell..(basically due to depletion of ATP).....
In this there is mitochondrial swelling due to formation of mitochondrial permeablity transition due to inc: Ca which activate PLase..
Inc: Ca occur due to dec: ATP(dec: oxidative phosphorylation) by membrane damage....

hey SDK ..... is this mtichondrial permiability transition a part of reversible injury????? or irreversible!

  #7

It is an irrevrsible process.......
This will furthur supress oxidative phosphorylation & worse cell injury process.......... 8)
