Hello, I am an IMG from europe. I read the conditions required for the J-1 Visa from the 2005 ECFMG Information Booklet (page 46), and had difficulty with understanding these 2 conditions: Have passed Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination™ (USMLE™); Hold a valid Standard ECFMG Certificate at commencement of training These two conditions contradict each other, since according to the booklet, in order to acquire the ECFMG certificate, one needs to pass USMLE Step 2 CS as well! The first condition above does not include the Step 2 CS exam in the requirement for the J-1 Visa, therefore, passing those two exams alone, will not entitle one with a valid ECFMG certificate! I wish to know: 1. Do I in fact need to pass the USMLE Step 2 CS, in order to get the J-1 visa in the far future? 2. In case the USMLE Step 2 CS is not required for the J-1 Visa, how long will the score results of USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 CK be valid (for applying for the J-1 Visa)? Thanks, Balig
