i dont think the essence of the NBME is to give answers and explanations. these are tests that are so similar to the real exam such that once they start to give the answers adn explanations then they lose their correlation to the real exams. i will say that if one prepares for the nbme and makes believe it is the real exam, then whatever one scores at the nbme is going to be so close to one's real score plus or minus 2. so iwill highly recommend taking the self test to everyone. that way you dont get surprises at the real exam. you know waht scores to expect and the exam is no longer a gamble. i had htis experience in both step 1 and step 2 exams. their was no difference between my nbme and real exam. one other observation i noted from my and other people's experiences is that 2 weeks is not long enough to change the scores appreciably if one studies for the nbme like the real exam. if one wants a huge change in the score, it is probably better to postpone the test by 4weeks or more

Too bad the questions do not have explanations ... or, at least I could not find any. At this price it would be nice to have detailed score information when you finish the test like I've seen in kaplan qbank. Other than that the questions are good, some of them are in 2 step format which is common in the real exam.
