I am an IMG with 85/208 in Step I. Have done my MD (Microbiology) in India and 3 years post MD experience. Still to take Step II. Will need H1 sponsorship also. Can somebody please comment on my chances for patho residency? Thanks.

Pathology is a very easy residency to get into, it never fills so you will have no problems getting over here. Best of luck.

"Easy to get into..." is a misconception. The field is seeing a rise in the number and caliber of applicants due to increased focus by students on lifestyle, malpractice, and other issues alike. This year 93% of the programs matched. You should be able to secure a position with your stats provided you pass step 2 and get all the paperwork in order. Focus on some smaller programs rather than the big name academic centers. Good luck

You should have absolutely NO problem whatsoever getting a path residency. They are begging for them and you can practically walk into one. My friend got a 75/182 and they signed him on independantly since he too is an IMG and can contract outside the match. Perhaps a residency at an ivy league is competetive, but not nationally. Alot of students arent going into path because there have been too many graduated and also there have been cutbacks in medicaid/medicare reimbursement. So..supposedly...they can stop residency in pathology for the next ten years and we will still have enough. Look up the article regarding the Pathology contraversy on google.com. there are several articles about "pathology, what went wrong". Cheers MD2B-in-Louisiana

Wake up...in which world r you living. People with high 90s and phD are getting so few calls for last 2 years. Pathology has become very competitive in last 2 years.

I have a similar situation. I am an IMG (2001), currently a PhD student at U of Toronto. Have an MSc from U of Toronto in human genetics. I am considering to take a 1 yr leave of absence from graduate school to write USMLE exams (haven't done any of them yet). and apply for 2009 match for pathology. For me it is pathology or nothing. I have a couple of publications from my MSc. What are my chances? Do you think it is likely to get a pathology position? or is it better to finish my PhD before match (which obviously takes 4-5 more years). Thank you guys for your thoughts
