Hi All!

I wonder if anyone knows the difference between clonic-tonic (grand mal) seizures and status epilepticus

Thank you grin

grand mal seizures are usually self limiting, treatment is prophylactic.
status epilepticus is a life threatening state in which the person continues seizing with no respite. Treatment is with diazepam (rectally if no IV is possible)

Ahab--
Lightening quick response: thank you!!  grin

So we find grand mal isn't the "grand baddy" I might have believed previously...Grand mal aka tonic-clonic YOU ARE NOTHING! I FEAR ONLY STATUS EPILEPTICUS (I am doing this nonsense to help remember...:? )

P.S. Qbank also mentions follow up with phenytoin following the diazepam.
Nice memory you have!

some points though :
Grand mall is a "Disease" which might be ESCLATED occasionally to the Status Epilepticus which is an "acute Condition". and yes ahab is right as long as you have the normal attacks you just PREVENT them but when the Cycle of attacks leads to the SE then BZD,phenobarbital, etc. should be given IV.
