Hello, everyone,

I failed step1, my first exam. So I am so depressed.
Anyway, I wonder how my failure will affect when I apply residency program.
And I wonder how many program directors think of the importance of exam attempt. Do many residency program need first exam's pass?

I expect your reply truly.

Thanks.

As far as I know, failing once shouldn't prohibit a residency application in the future i.e. you can take it more than once and still match, but as for how PD would subjectively judge your application I can't say

Hi There:

Done is done. No point in staying depressed. See what went wrong. How you can improve your performance next time. Doing exam-like MCQs often help.

Unfortunately, attempts at USMLE exams are often looked at by the programs. A rough guess is: between 15-25% programs prefer first attempt. The good news is - at some programs if you score higher than their minimum scores, it sometimes makes up for the fails on any step. Good luck next time.

Depression wont help you......I know what you feel and God must have reason why he did that..... Do study hard and do the best.....Do whatever things that would improve your score........Failing doesnt mean that you're dumb. Its just that you're not acquainted with USMLE type of questions...

This is really pretty true - so study, study, study (this is where I begin to sound like a CD that is repeating) and blow the exam away the next time.

Good luck

It must be very tough, but don't let this put you down. I personally have a former Med School colleague who failed Step1 the first time. Presently she's in her 3rd year of anesthesiology in California. So, how about that?
Have faith and work hard and you'll get there.
The best of luck.

I studied for about 4 hrs a day for 4 weeks and passed on my first attempt at Step1 with a score of 93. Don't worry, its possible.
