hi all,

Who can say what the important differences between hemochromatosis & hemosiderosis are??

Thanks!

Hemochromatosis is characterized by a progressive increase in total body iron stores with abnormal iron deposition in multiple organs

Hemosiderosis - deposited hemosiderin in multiple organs

hemochromatosis is parenchymal iron deposition with damage to the organ affevted
hemosiderosis is depostion of iron in the macrophages with no organ damage

These days they are calling Chromatosis those pts + for and recessive for C282Y or H63D gene loci on chrom 6. Other wise it is siderosis.

Hi there.
When it comes to hemochromatosis / hemosiderosis - there are actually two divisions:

The first one says that hemochromatosis is the congenital genetic defect in Hfe gene on chr 6 with increased absorption of Fe (in duodenum). Hemosiderosis in that system is considered to be acquired disease (for example after recurrent blood transfusions - remember - one unit of blood 450mL brings 250mg of extra Fe to your body).
Ok. now the second system:
This one is more clinically relevant - and is expained above by mani smiling face
Hope it helps.
