Hi all!

What is N-acetylcysteine used for?

I will give you one answer: acetominophen OD antidote.

Now what do you think Qbank said?

Moreover, do those who have taken Step 1 and used Qbank think I should pay any attention to what Qbank says? It seems like there questions are a bit too esoteric/unusual knit-picking details sometimes...

Thanks! grin

N-acetyl cysteine also used in cystic fibrosis pts (it helps in clearing the thick secretions in lungs)

You're both right, usmle warriors!
Now tell me frankly though, do you think Qbank goes too far with asking about the CF helping mucolytic properties of this drug? I had never heard of this in 2 years...I only knew it as the antidote to acetominophen poisoning.

Hrmph! Qbank pharmacology:roll:

NAmf ,

Q bank tries to inform us about latest points where they might stress in exams .So take it as a learning tool apart from testing.

i just want to add a bit if i can
N-AC is not only used for CF but may be used in other conditions such as BOOPS as a "Mucolytic Expectorant".

No I wouldnt discount q bank because as asmi says its updated:
and CF is the most common genetic disease in Caucasians.
CF patients can actually get on the mortality charts by in so many words
"drowning in their own mucous secretions"
This [glutathione replenisher] has to be given early ,rapidly and i.v. is best
to prevent this.

hi mjl smiling face ,

Can anybody tell more about BOOPS ?Is it just a new term (combination)?

Yes ,i read that NAC can be used in any disease where in excess mucosal secretions /thick secretions causing resp .obstruction.

BOOP is actually Broch Oblit Organizing Pneumonia.
Associated with many different lung diseases. Is due to accumulation of connective tissue in small airways. SOB is common complaint.
Treat mostly with steroids. I guess Mucomyst will not hurt here, but is not the definitive treatment.

N- Acetylcystein is also used for general pneumonia prophylaxis. It makes the bronchial secretion more fluid and the patient can eject it easier.

more use of N-A-C
...in pts at risk for renal complication from contrast injection during CT scan, N-A-C is given to prevent it. Works through NO synthase mechanism.
