Hi guys, I've been listening to the goljan audio lectures and think he's a funny guy/good lecturer but his material doesnt strike me as being full of highly useful usmle pearls ... it seems that a lot of the stuff is very general and useful only as background fluff. Have any people here taken the boards after listening to his tapes? are they more useful than I'm giving him credit for? I particularly like the idea of audio material as it means that I can be studying while commuting or even doing housework. Does anyone know of any other good usmle audio material? any websites with bootlegged stuff etc. Thanks

He mostly gives the concepts and these concepts are HY for exams. Memorize his concepts and you ll find a lot of questions in exam from that. He talks about what they test on exams. There are a lot of audio options for Step 1, eg. Web Prep, but probably the idea of doing housework at the same time wont be helpful.

as someone who's taken step 1, i can tell you that goljan audio is indispensable. it may seem like generalities to you bc he addresses concepts more than details, but this is more of what the usmle tests you on. nothing better prepares you for step 1. perhaps your understanding of the material is already so deep that you don't need goljan to simplify. but he does give a ton of pearls that i saw on the usmle. if you continue to find goljan too easy, i'd recommend you just read and memorize the 100pp. goljan HY.

i agree with everyone here- Goljan is the best! after listening to 8 of his lectures, i could hear him talk in my head as i go through questions. and i just realized that i was able to tie up concepts while doing questions, like he did! there was one time when i was organizing things in my room while listening to him, that i didn't remember exactly what he said, so i had to rerun the whole thing. after the third rerun, i found myself thinking ahead of him! can't really tell how effective he can be with the actual test since i'm still to write it, but with the way he makes me remember and understand things, i can say that he really is the best! nuprin, thanks for the advice on pharma. i did questions after making the cards, and i remembered a number of them without even having to go thru the cards

glad it helped! that's what i did... never went through most of the cards again. goljan did the exact same thing for me... heard his voice all the time while learning new stuff, revising, doing questions, and taking the exam. after i was done, i missed him a little bit.

I think Goljian is the BEST :icon_queen:... i'm just sorry I didn't have him in Pathology in school. Let me tell u how i did this: I studied Path the last of all, so during the time that i studied the other subjects - I listened to G in the bus going to/from school everyday (almost 2 lectures a day). As u can imagine I coulnd pay attention all the time but it did help because as I went through the other subjects i tried to emphasize the pathology things. Then when I finally started pathology i listened to them once again (it was a lot easier) - one lecture and then i read the chapter from the book. The hole path review with the audio lectures took me 3 weeks studing 7-8 h a day.....at the end as much as i love G i wanted to cut the book in little pieces

hey pvs77, no, no helpful premade cards. just copying stuff out of first aid onto notecards. the process is really helpful for memorizing. see my post in ahdy's daily diary for more details...
