PROGRAMS IN PEDIATRICS APPLIED:
30 in total... I realize it was a bit on the low side; yet, once again, money is an issue as you all know.

The ones who did not respond at all:

University of Alabama-Birmingham
Children's National Medical Center
Orlando Health Program
University of Florida-Jacksonville at Wolfson's Children's Hospital
University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center
University of South Florida
Maimonides Medical Center Program

As you can see, I was really keen on trying to match to a Florida program because of family reasons at the time-being. In the end, times are tough in Florida; they must have run out of paper or were short-staffed because they couldn't even send me a rejection! sticking out tongue

IV CALLS FROM :

Florida State University
Miami Children's
University of Florida
John H. Stroger Jr. Cook County
University of Illinois-Chicago
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health
SUNY Health Science Center (Downstate)-Brooklyn
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health
St. Barnabas
Case Western Reserve-MetroHealth
Cincinnati Children's
Cleveland Clinic
Rainbow Babies and Children's
Albert Einstein Medical Center
Penn State Hershey Medical

So, not bad, a little over 50% gave me an interview, and I did have to cancel a few because of work and (recurring theme) money constraints. However, I made sure that I had a good mix of community programs, university-affiliated and university programs.

MATCHED AT: Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital grin (#1 choice)

IF I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN: I would probably not have underestimated myself. In the end, thanks to one of my mentors, I decided to aim high and go for the university programs. I'm so glad I did.

FACTORS THAT MIGHT HAVE HURT ME: Well, taking the steps late in the game, which slowed down my certification. This might have reduced my competitiveness for some of the high-end programs from which I received a rejection or a no response. A few things went wrong in my initial application for step 1 thanks to my "competent" medical school and every test was delayed by 3 months. Beleaguer your medical schools if they are in charge of your papers. Also, I didn't realize that Step 2 CS had such a long waiting period. So, please, guys, sign up for that test as soon as possible.

Regardless, the better programs on my list of calls contacted me before the release of CS and some before the CK.

FACTORS THAT MIGHT HAVE HELPED ME: Not requiring a visa, I think, saved me from a lot of heartache. Tip: call the programs before applying and ask about the visa issue so you don't spend too much money. I called many to ask about IMG's acceptance, and some will flatly refuse. Honesty stings. Also another thing that might have helped me was that I am a volunteer for a one-year commitment to service program. Programs asked me about my current job. Absolutely every program and almost every individual interviewer asked me about my background in general (why did I move outside the country?).

Interviews were so much fun... except for the tours.

Good luck, everyone! smiling face
