Tips on how to choose residency programs – by IMGexperts.com “What is my chance in getting into a US residency program?” Almost all IMGs wonder aloud this question – Here are a few tips from pros which might increase your chances of success: A. Aim high – many IMGs might be intimated by prestigious residency programs which are very competitive among US applicants. However, if you have a very strong background including superior USMLE scores, US clinical experience, and communication skills, don’t sell yourself short. Apply to top programs, too! We know IMGs who are admitted into top US residency programs with even passing scores and perform superbly in those programs. B. Cast a wide net – The odds is against most IMGs to get into any US residency program. So apply as many programs as allowable by your financial situation. Even many US medical graduates apply for more than 15 programs. There is a proven correlation between the number of programs you apply and the chance of your getting matched. C. Get US clinical experience – Any US clinical experience will make a big difference in your application. So plan ahead. In general, it is a lot easier to do clinical work under supervision in a US hospital while you are still a medical student than after you have graduated. So apply for an externship or an away rotation in a US medical school program as early as possible. D. Learn more about each program - Most residency programs have specific minimum requirements for IMGs. You need to know them intimately so that you can be better equipped to meet these requirements. Unfortunately, these criteria are usually not available on program websites. So you have to call or write each program to get the information. However, phone calls or emails to these programs are not returned promptly. That makes this process an extremely time-consuming and frustrating task for IMGs. IMGexperts.com has been providing IMGs specific program information for four years. Every year IMGexperts.com contacts over 1500 Residency Directors and compiles IMG Minimum Requirement reports for each of the most requested specialties such as Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, Ob/Gyn Residency, Psychiatry Residency, and Pediatrics. Every IMGexperts.com report includes minimum USMLE scores, minimum US training requirements, year-of-graduation requirement, current number of IMGs in the residency program, and type of visa sponsored.
