Don,t want to ruin the professional mood... Still ..for a female IMG struggling to pass USMLE steps and get a residency in US, I was wondering when is the time to have children?During residency, after it, or never?

Oh, Almina You read my mine! I am female IMG, I am married and we are thinking about having children, BUT WHEN??? I was thinking about maybe in the residency, most of the programm give up to 90 days maternitiy leave, but you still have to catch up the time later. Before residency? I don't know, I heard many residencies are not very welcoming young mothers.. . of course not officially  So, it is a problem, but like my mom says, just have a kid and everything else will come aloong with it... I think she is a bit optimistic well, let me know if you have some good thoughts about that

Happy to see somebody in the same shoes! How young a mother has to be not to be accepted for a residency(of cource not officially )? I mean the age of the child. From another point of view, If she does have a child already, she will not have to take those 90 days off during her residency...And from the third point of view, if she was able to get through exams and do well on them with a child, then it's a plus for her organization skills. So why not? Good luck!

hey i am married and i think of having kids when i am in residency. well thats the plan in my head so far. i know a lot of girls do it that way in their second or third year of residency (if its family med or internal med so whole thing is three years) or others get pregnant in last year and plan the delievery right after finishing up residency, take a year off in between to spend it with your kid before doing fellowship or job. asmi if u are planning on marrying a doctor (in residency or doing job whatever) then u can do it now while you r preparing, it will be a help. certainlly it was for me

Typically maternity leave is 6 weeks for a typical delivery and 8 weeks for a ceserean. If this time is to be made up, is left to the descretion of the program director. With the Family Leave act from the government, you can take up to 12 weeks of UNPAID leave and still have your job protected. I've known one resident in 15 years to take this option.

I see...so I guess kids have to be made after residency(Of course if we are still in our reproductive age), otherwize - a baby sitter for 6 weeks old baby and no more breast milk.

hi, I am an IMG '98 and arrived in US at 2002. I am reviewing right now for Step 1 and had my baby delivered last May. I did heard about 6 week-old babies being brought to day cares or being taken cared of by the nanny. But when I had my baby, I just wasn't that comfortable leaving him right away. I would say its difficult to study if your son is just an infant... but it's not impossible. I guess the best time is to have the baby before the residency (maybe go to residency when your baby is in his toddler years wherein separation anxiety is gone; lots of pre-schools out there anyway) or have the baby in the last years of residency or after. In that way, a mother can enjoy some time with her baby. Instead of not being there to see baby's first smiles, first steps, etc.

Friendly advice... Having kids Plus a demanding residency training is surely a hard work, very hard work but thinkof the happiness & love they could bring. Realistically you have to have a trusted family member who could help you out. If you're still young like you're in your 26th or so fine to wait for another 3-4 yrs. But if you're 32 & above then think twice of not having kids right now if u'r really thinking of having one or two inthe future. just a thought.. i'm happy to have two kids. Been studying since they were babies now that they're older, they even teach me how to memorize key words. How about that? They're only 7 y/olds but never regret fr. putting off my career to take good care of them. kids... i love them. i wished i started having them at an earlier age.
