D-xylose absorption test differentiates small bowell disease from pancreatic disease or bile salt deficiency that is not related to bacterial overgrowth. Orally administred xylose doesn't require pancreatic enzymes for reabsorbtion by the small bowel. Decreased level of xylose in the blood or urine after an orally administred dose - indicates small bowel disease, whereas normal levels indicate pancreatic disease or bile salt dificiency.
