Kaplan Qbank USMLE

There have been so many great and helpful reviews already written about the exam by Meg and Nuprin and loads of people in between so I really don't know what to add- especially since at the moment it all feels like a big blur. Maybe tomorrow when i'm thinking a bit more clearly i can give a more detailed assessment.

I had mixed feelings- the first two blocks and the last block felt very easy-in fact they were probably the difficulty level of the NMBE cd we're given when we register. The middle four blocks on the other hand, well i'm pretty sure the proctors must have seen me mouth "wtf" quite a few times during them haha. I struggled with time during them because there were just so many questions where I was debating between two answers, so I ended up marking a lot of questions but never getting the chance to go back to them. Granted that's usually a good thing, i consistently have the habit of changing write answers to wrong so maybe it's a blessing in disguise!

Subject wise here's the little i remember:

Patho- there seemed to be a lot of gyne/repro related questions, far more than anything else. Overall not too difficult.

Physio- lots and lots of physio- the standard charts whether its acid base, pth/ca, kidney, electrolytes, thyroid hormones, lh/fsh blah blah blah you get the point- where they have the arrows indicating rise or fall or no change based on whatever scenario they presented. Seriously it felt like there were a ton- time consuming, annoying, but at least doable!

Beh Sci- I don't think i got as many cases as most people- 7-8 at the most, there were were an equal amount of stats, and a fair amount from the rest.

Anatomy- This is my worst subject, i HATE it, but surprisingly i think i might have done better on this than other subjects. In other words it must have been really easy haha.

Pharma-- Mostly easy, some really wierd q's tht made my head spin, but i blanked on out all of it so not expecting to do too well on this part.

Biochem- my best subject, or so i thought- maybe 18-20 q's- don't have a clue how i did on them, some were really easy but just presented in a wierd manner while others i was wondering how they really expected us to know them!

Mol bio is really a blur, i guess around 15 q's, the questions were long and i didn't really have the time to give as much thought as i should have to them so can't say much- i thought that i did prepare mol halfway decently, hopefully i'll be ok.

Genetics- ok- karyotype analysis, a couple carrier rate and probability equations, maybe 8-10 q's.

Eh i have no idea if this is helping anyone out, but i will say i had the impression that overall it was a still a LOT easier than the NMBE online or kaplan simulated- but i think there were a lot of easy questions that i messed up on and actually felt a lot more positive after those than i did today sad Pray for me please! Anyhow best of luck to everyone, some of you i'll be seeing in the step 2 forum where i hope to be posting more regularly grin

Hi aish

Thanks for your wonderful review. There had been quite a few tough mol bio exams, so did you do high yield for that subject? It would be great if you could mention the books which helped you. Best of luck for your score.

I pretty much did Kaplan, then q-bank mcq's- spent a lot of time on explanations since i did poorly, then Kaplan again and REALLY tried to understand it. Granted some was still over my head no matter how much i read lol. I did look over a couple things for clarification in HY like cDNA but couldn't get myself to do the whole book. I think Kaplan should help you answer a good amount of questions, but if you have the time i know a lot of people do recommend doing HY.

Thanks a lot!!! I am sorry to ask so many questions, but what did you do for immuno as it is becoming HY in exam. Thanks a lot again and best of luck

  #7

No sweat, ask away! I did immuno purely from Kaplan, and it was surprisingly easy on the exam. There were 4-5 simple ones related to the immunodeficiency syndromes, one related to the albumin/gamma globulin graph, a marker one, and two i had no clue on.
