If there is a trace of Leukocyte Estrase (whether it being 1+ or 2+ ) and there are WBC present with a negative culture, does this mean there is bacteria, or can this mean that the Leukocyte Estrase trace is from inflammation?

It is WBCs which cause this right? which can be from either Infection or Inflammation.

I agree with what you said; the leukocyte esterase should come up as long as WBCs are present.

Yep...if culture is negative, the urine is clear, unless you have reasons to suspect bacteria that does not grow well like TB or Ureaplasma. Moreover, presence of Leuc Est only says that... that WBC are present in urine. The erasons for its presence can be numerous some of which you have mentioned, i would also add, hematuria and Ca as part of differential...but the list can be long.
So in the end.. Leuc Est is not spcific for any problem..only for presence of WBC.

How about Nitrite?

  #7

Nitrite is the biproduct of bacterial existance, so its level signify infection, but I would go by WBC, LES and Nit and Culture combined.
