A 26-year-old woman is undergoing surgery and is anesthetized with an inhalant anesthetic. She is also given an IV dose of succinylcholine. Within minutes, she develops a heart rate of 124 and increasing core body temperature. What is the mechanism of action of the drug of choice for this patient's condition? A. It interferes with the release of Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum B. It is a competitive antagonist of ACh at the motor end plate C. It is a GABA receptor agonist that enhances inhibition of nerve impulses D. It uncouples oxidative phosphorylation, thereby preventing heat formation

yeah, its A. this is actually asking for the treatment of choice for malignant hyperthermia. the hidden story behind the scene might be that both inhalant (halothane) and succinylcholine have potential to induce malignant hyperthermia. as to the difficulty, i personally would not say its too hard because this q tests a high-yield point. good luck with ur prep!

Great answers all. Thanks. I do realize that the drug in question is dantrolene, however, I was searching to see if anyone who has recently taken the exam recently found their pharmacology questions to be asked or worded similar to this. I got this question from a friend who is about to appear for Step1, so as far as I can tell, it is from some review-source question.

Actually PsychDr28, with pharm, anything is possible, i mostly had drug charts on my exam with them showing Drug X and Drug's Y effect on a graph and asking what drug it could be, i dont think i had any questions where i was asked for the drug of choice. But you really never know!!!
