Hey all,
I'd very grateful for some advice/guidance from anyone with some knowledge/information/insight into the following:

I'm an IMG from Australia who is keen on entering an orthopedic residency program in the States.
I have published 2 papers in decent orthopedic journals and have good references from Australian orthopedic surgeons.
Are ther ANY people on this chat room who have successfully matched into an orthopedic program? If not do you know any people? are there any IMGS in their programs?

Realistically do I have any chance of getting into a program or is it a "closed shop" for local graduates.

PLEASE help.

Ian.

I do know IMGs who have gotten ortho. It is not as hard for you being from Australia vs someone from a developing country, but it is still not easy. You need excellent scores on part I and II. Did any of your Aussie profs train in the US? If so or even if not, if they are well known in the field and know people in the US, get them to get the ball rolling for you. Every IMG I know who gets ortho or CTS or Neurosurg has had connections. Are you still a student? You need to get some US ortho experience. Come do an elective rotation here. If not, you can come here and try doing research for a while, but if you have already done that, just try to get in. It can be done; it's just difficult. Your papers will certainly help. Oh, one more thing, you can do ortho there in Australia and then try to come. You will probably have a better chance. And you know it is much easier to apply for a fellowship (post residency position) than for an ortho residency spot. You just need three years practicing in an approved training program to get a license.
