First a little info about me. I'm a newbie here, my 1st post. I just finished my second year of med school in the United States. I studied 6 weeks for step 1 (5-10 hrs/day), and little during 2nd year. I read the 2003 Kaplan lecture notes 1 time, I read some of the Underground Clinical Vignettes series, read FA 2003 1 time through solid, and made it through Kaplan Q-bank 1 time with a score of 80%. I also had my past two years of med school to help out. I did well. I have a 4.0 through the first two years... not that it matters when taking this test... so the juice. If I had to sum up what I thought about the test I'd say it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but it wasn't as easy either. I know that sounds stupid, but that's how I feel. I saw a majority of path/phys and about equal proportions of pharm/micro and biochem/genectics would come next. There were about 15-20 on bs, about 10 on anatomy and very little of everything else. There were only about 2 or 3 questions where I had never heard of what they were talking about so I felt good about that. On the other hand there were alot of questions where I could get it down to two good answers and I had to make an educated guess. And even better, I felt there were a lot of strait up easy questions... so I'm pretty confident I didn't fail (knock on wood). I felt Q-bank definitely helped and the questions wern't harder or easier, just different. I'd say q-bank tended to be a little more strait forward as to what they wanted, but they were similar concepts. Umm I had no problems with time, just waiting and praying for a good score now!!! If you guys have any questions I'd be happy to reply. Thanks, Jeff

Just study hard with what you got left and hope for a little luck... that's what I did. Guess we'll see how lucky I was he he. About q-bank. I didn't touch q-bank untill I was through with ALL of my reading ( 21 days before my exam ), that way I was sure to test my knowlege. From start to finish, I chose to radomize my questions in blocks of 50 so I'd get used to the format of the real test. I only did 100 questions a day and the rest of the day after that I'd review concepts in FA 2003. I started reading the kaplan books in december a few pages here and there, but didn't hit it hard until I got out of school which was early may. I read 100 pages per day, most of it was review anyway. I started reading FA last summer to recap what I learned 1st year. Also something that really helped was, at our school our final exams are NBME subject exams and since NBME writes Step 1 it got us used to seeing "those types of questions". Anyway work hard for the next couple of weeks and do the best you can do! Jeff

I wouldn't say nervous. I would like to do really well, but if I don't it's not the end of the world. I studied hard and I'll get what I deserve. I'm just glad it's over, though I do keep wondering.... guess I'll know in 6 weeks. I was going for a 250 but I know it's pretty hard to do so I'm not counting on it. Also those names don't sound familiar, but they could be older or younger than me. I don't know many of the people out of my class (start 3rd year next week).

Hi Jeff, Congrats on finishing up step1! since you got an impressive 80% on Q-bank, I think very likely you will get a 99 for the real exam. as you said, the subject tests from NBME is similar in style to the Step, so could you please tell me if it is available to IMGs like me? many thanks here! all the best! tong
