Praise God! I fell out of my seat with such joy and shouted that my friend just passed!!! Namf, you are a true inspiration and help. I have lived vicariously through your daily diary entries. I look forward to sharing your posts on Step2 forum. I am in my waiting limbo phase right now, but my soul rejoices for your AWESOME success!! I read your passing post with such excitement as if somehow your passing makes everything right in the world again. I needed that positive affirmation boost. Thank you for all the joy, comfort, and hope you bring to us all. I would be proud to be your patient, soon-to-be Doctor Namf!

How could I forget mash and tasneembanu
& thank you very much, sar!

You can clearly see the talent for memory in operation here that has lead in part to my struggles with these boards

THANK YOU ALL and EVERY one of MY BEAUTIFUL PREP4USMLE friends! It is with great joy that I read your letters here! I just hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive my slip-shod and rag-tag efforts to acknowledge and thank you here as I stumble through the surgery clerkship while checking in here on the run!

Although I ask too much, please forgive me!

Thanks again for everything!! I just wanted to add this information if it helps anyone.

May Step 1 score 169
August retake score 195
NBME $45 test Late May 370
NBME $45 test Late July 460
Qbank (about 80% completed I think?, almost all random 50s) 54%avg
(I got a little better at Qbank with time--started in 40s and 50s, ended in 50s and 60s. Man, those really rare 70s felt GREAT!)

#1 help from: Goljan audio & notes (lecture notes; not just Hi-Yields)
#2 Qbank (advice: go thru FAST--the questions and answers are repeated in slight variations you will re-encounter and will reinforce each other until it gets CEMENTED INTO YOUR BRAIN! So don't waste too much time making note cards and getting through only about 100questions a day. It would have been better to do 200 and make notes only for REALLY hi-yield or Important Feeling topics)
#2(tied with Qbank): I would use Step Up which I liked better than First Aid--but then First Aid has some stuff not in Step Up. Maybe you could use Step Up by writing into it everything that's missing as the best way to solve this problem. Another hi-yield synergy I found useful was taking Goljan (maybe when you listen for the 2nd or 3d time) and reading on his topics in First Aid or Step Up as you go as a way to cover some First Aid or Step Up. However, Goljan's notes and questions are so incredibly POWERFUL, if you could master them I think you really (even I really, not that I've figured it out) could score as high as 230-250 or more...Especially if you add in thorough reading of 1st Aid and doing Qbank through 2 times (1st time random, 2nd time all mistakes)--you could CRUSH this test!!
#4 Talking this test over with friends (group study) or on line q&a here on prep4usmle.
P.S. Most of all, don't quit and keep going no matter where the emotions find you on a daily basis. In particular for my case: I would get discouraged after putting in MONSTER days that I still felt NOWHERE. So then I would get a let down for a day, two, or even 3, by which time I felt guilty and would do another MONSTER day--and the cycle would repeat! It
would have been better if I could just have had the faith that putting in little drops into the bucket each day will have an effect. And a little each day instead of a monster load one day followed by no energy the next few is not only PAINFUL AS HELL but actually counterproductive ultimately. Just work steadily--maybe 2 half days off per week. Make them count with good friends, movie, exercise, fun...Give this test everything so that you'll have no regrets when the testing's done. I will never forget how painful it was. All my love and strength to you still climbing the mountain. I will be climbing on, though, with many more sharp crags to climb...like Step 2 and all these clerkship shelfs!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Congratulations namf, you are a real inspiration to me, as I myself am in the same boat as you, since I failed my step also the first time around. Your posts have really helped me feel motivated and also on improving myself. I am doing goljan and evreything this time which i neglected last time and also qbank. Again great job and best of luck for step 2!!!!!!

Namf, if anybody deserves this victory, it's definitely you. Congratulations many times over. We all knew you could do it (even if you didn't wink). I hope you take this conquest and run with it, leaving behind all doubts and those demons who whisper them in your ears at night. Good luck with surgery, and pop back in once in a while to help those along the way.

Best wishes,
a

HA! Just to keep my diary alive I post this question here:

WHERE IS PSYCHDR2B!!!???

I MISS HIM VERY MUCH, & I WANTED TO BE REASSURED HE'S OK

  #111

hey man! congrats!

worked hard for that grade.

  #112

Thanks a lot, lmbebo!! I hope your progress is finding you with a strong wind at your back, but if not...keep fighting the good fight. Thanks again for your kind words.

Have you--or has ANYONE--heard from PsychDr2B!??? PsychDr2B, my friend--I know you were meant to pursue your work through to its end, if only for the fact that there are so many other people (and I can tell you this clearly having been in the psychiatry rotation now) with not a bit of the care and obvious patient-centered care I have seen you express. Frankly their callous and disrespectful attitudes towards patients disgusts me. I need people like you to keep fighting the good fight with me so I can see my work through too...I pray for you, and hope you are too busy and quite well without coming here. Perhaps you will read this in time, and I hope it finds you very well.
