Hi gang,

If you are exercising and you increase your AMP, what will this result in?
Is it breakdown of glycogen? How??
or is it someother thing??

If you like, I will add choices later, but for now--lets hear from the biochem pros please! Come on it's Sunday night...post for a minute!

By the way, can you explain for me the difference between cAMP and AMP? Also, doesn't ATP break down into ADP and P--so then something is breaking down ADP too?? Finally, what does adenylyl cyclase do???

Thanks a lot--more help-me-I've-got-questions posts will be forthcoming!

increased AMP stimulates glycogen phosphorylase(local control) and glucose 1 po4(end product of glycogenolysis) is converted by mutase to glucose 6 po4 which then enters glycolysis... PFK1 is also stimulated by AMP...(remember muscles do not ve glucose 6 po4ase so, glucose is not produced.)
aerobic glycolysis-- ATP s r produced via oxidative phosphorylation
anaerobic--- lactic acid will deposit---> fatigue

adenylate cyclase converts ATP to cAMP
and PDE converts cAMP to 5 AMP(not sure abt it)

cyclic AMP is 3'5'AMP
ATP has 2 high energy ~P bonds and both of 'em release 7300 kcals of energy..

So you would agree with me that an increased intracellular concentration of AMP in muscles after about 10-15 min of strenuous exercise would have the effect of increasing gycogen breakdown?

And adenylyl cylase=adenylate cyclase?

Look I have to say I'm a basic beginner in Biochem playing at a level above my head--but I must! So when you say "po4" Mash, how do I read that? Is it phosphorase? I imagine you would put po8 if you wanted to say phosphate, right?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

po4 is phosphate
adenylyl cyclase is adenylate cyclase
