hi! can someone please enlighten me about the residency training system in the US? do ALL IMGs have to undergo one year of "pre-residency" before they get accepted into the residency proper? and is this "pre-residency" year the same as the PGY-1, categorical, preliminary...etc? im so confused with all these terms! finally, are there some programs that accept IMGs directly into PGY-2? please help. thanks.

No. You graduate medical school, take the USMLE exams, become ECFMG certified, apply, interview and join US residency positions. Someone who needs to complete one year of IM prior to joining another program (i.e. derm, rad, Neuro, etc), and does this internship year, sometimes it's called a "pre-rad" or "pre-derm" year. I've not heard the term pre-residency prior to your note.
