COMA: like being asleep and unresponsive to external stimuli VEGETATIVE STATE: awake inside but can't think or emote BRAIN DEATH: clinical end of all life functions coma A deep prolonged unconsciousness where the patient cannot be aroused. This is usually as the result of a head injury, neurological disease, acute hydrocephaly, intoxication or metabolic derangement. Vegetative state refers to the neurocognitive status of individuals with severe brain damage, in whom physiologic functions (sleep-wake cycles, autonomic control, and breathing) persist, but awareness (including all cognitive function and emotion) is abolished. brain death Total cessation of brain function for 24 hours as manifested by absence of spontaneous movement, absence of spontaneous respiration, and absence of all brainstem reflexes.

Excellent answer !! To be more clinically specific for Brain death ..3 criteria : 1. No EEG activity 2. No Brain Blood flow 3. No response to external stimuli :-) So wuts the difference between simple death and Brain Death ? 8)
