What does mean the term "Board Certified"

  #2

Board Certified means that you have taken the certifiying examination for the specialty in which you have completed your residency training. Boards are the final measurement of your residency training.

are the specialist in the United States allowed to practice their line of specialty
even without passing the specialty board?

Well, let's say that you completed an internal medicine residency, and then went into cardiology and finished that fellowship. If you don't pass the IM boards, the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) will not allow you to take the Cardiology boards. sad

So, can you practice medicine/cardiology? smiling face Yes, you can open a practice, see patients. But you aren't a "board certified" physician. :? Many hospitals and insurance companies are making this mandatory. Your choice of what hospital you can admit patients to may be limited - or insurances that you will be allowed to accept.
:x
That is why many residencies and fellowships put a strong emphasis on the board pass rate for the program. It shows that they have a strong enough curriculum that will provide for its residents to pass the boards.

What is the ratio between the non board certified and the board certified speicialist in the US? Is it the non board certified has the larger number? Why is it the society is so lenient in allowing the non board certified to go on sub specialty training since the pre requisite in getting the fellowship training is to pass first the specialty board? When is the right time to address them as especialist?

I wouldn't even know where to look for this information.

If you go through residency, you are considered an "internist". You aren't considered a "board certified internist" until you pass the boards. Why can you go on with your training? Because your first year of fellowship starts (July) before the boards are held for the year (August), and results are typically released in November. AND it's not mandatory that you take the boards.

It's similar to graduating medical school and having little or no post grad training. You are still a "doctor"

No residency gives you a board certified title. You have to pass a very difficult test for it. The residency programs sometimes state the percentage of their residents that passed the test. The greater the number, the more atractive the program is, because in theory, it teaches well.
