when do we start giving AZT and how long will it be given ?

AZT start at 14w until labor and delivery.

tess, are you sure it's not given for a period post-partum? That's what it says in Blueprints but no exact time is given.

That's what kaplan says. I think Blueprint has a point to continue the drug. My guess is better keep use it until the test result of the baby to see if baby is infected or not. Any more thoughts? :idea:

here it is the complete tt

After the first trimester HIV-infected pregnant women are given 100mg (milligrams) of AZT five times a day and continued throughout pregnancy.

Intravenously during labor in a 1-hour loading dose of 2mg per kg (kilogram) of body weight, followed by continuous IV (intravenous) of 1mg per kg of body weight per hour until delivery.

The newborn for the first six weeks of life, is administered the syrup form (AZT), 2mg per kg body weight every six hours.

So for mom we treat until delivery and for HIV+ positive newborn how long we treat ?

AZT + C-section has been shown to decrease the risk of HIV transmission to 2% (from Kaplan test explanations)

All HIV-positive gravidas should be receiving AZT prophylaxis, which is continued from 14 weeks' gestation throughout pregnancy, including delivery. C-section is preffered in the USA, Breast feeding should be avoided.
Neonates - Zidovudine within their first 6-12 hours of life until aged 6 weeks .
