Hey Everyone

I am sure some of you know me. I am currently working in New York. I hae done Steps I, II, CSA, TOEFL, and sit Step III in 10 days. I am in the unpleasant process of sorting out visa stuff, but I can probably realistically and honestly give you the run-down.

Would be very happy to help anyone out who needs to know what to do.

Any NZers trying to get hold of me can phone 212-639 2000 and page me on 4017 during the day (Eastern Std time).

Hi Simon, your name sounds familiar - did you graduate from Otago?
I graduated in 1994 from Otago (Wgtn branch)
I,ve done the step 2 and TOEFL and I,m studying for step 1
Any advice on how best to prepare for this and the CSA?
How long did it take you?
I,m currently working in Auckland and have almost completed fellowship
All the best for your step 3

did you have to retrain in the US or was your NZ training recognised?

Are Australian and NZ Fellows able to complete fellowships in the US?

Ben

Hi Ben
I am an Auckland graduate from 2000, although there is someone else with the same name as me from Otago.
It is not a simple process - you still have several exams, the residency match, your training will likley not be credited from NZ, and visas are a major consideration. I was fortunate for a number of reasons, and move to Boston in June to begin a surgery residency there. I am overseas right now, but after May 18 until June 14 I am on the number listed above - call me and I can explain it all in a bit more depth.

Hi Simon

I am also in the process of starting a residency in the US - I have applied for the 2005 Match, trying to get into a good internal medicine residency. Small world - I saw your post just now and it is awesome to find out a former class-mate has been through the same thing. I have done the Step 1 and 2 USMLE and did fairly well (wish I had done those at med school!), and I have scheduled quite a few interviews for November and a couple in December already. If you happen to read this post, it would be cool to hear from you and find out how you are getting on. My email is darrynappleton@hotmail.com.

I am taking the Step 3 exam soon---still waiting on my Step 2 Clinical Skills results, but once those are through I am going to apply for the Step 3 in one of the states that allows you to take the exam before a residency, like CT or NY or something. I am keen to match at a program that would sponsor an H1B visa, so I need that Step 3. It would be great if you could pass on a few tips about the Step 3 and Visa issues. For example, what books you found helpful for Step 3 and whether the content for the MCQs is actually fairly similar to Step 2...that kind of thing. Anyway, hope you get this, and look forward to hearing from you.

All the best
