A 55-year-old man has had patchy leukoplakia of the anterior floor of his mouth for 4 years. He now has a raised, firm white lesion in the same area. Examination of tissue obtained on biopsy of this new lesion is most likely to show A) Burkitt's lymphoma B) Kaposi's sarcoma C) aphthous ulcer D) squamous cell carcinoma E) Warthin's tumor F) Candida infection G) mixed tumor of the parotid gland

I have a question. Is there any difference between leukoplakia and hairly leukoplakia? Are they both precancerous?

Oral Hairy Leukoplakia is a white patch seen on the lateral borders of the tongue specifically in people with immunosuppression - most commonly AIDS and is associated with EB virus . Leukoplakia has no such limiting associations So...leukoplakia is a broad term that includes leukoplakias of possible infective origin like hairy leukoplakia

digitaldoc, I think I saw this question on q bank and they were asking which is precancerous and they had listed both leukoplakia and hairyleukoplakia. However I am not 100% sure.

Unlike hairyleukoplakia, leukoplakia has many causes and can mean many things... certainly a candida albicans infection won't cause an oral tumor.

Dear Bela ..I saw an cancer expert website which said that Hairy Leukoplakia need not be treated and may tend to get cancerous due to the underlying immunosuppresion ! - so i would say it is not - if both leukoplakia and Hairy leukoplakia are listed the treatment for Hairy Leukplakia is treating AIDS a good resource for free medical information disease wise is www.emedicine.com - i love it !

This question is old, but i came across it, and was just wondring why it would'nt be candia, because even tho i thought of SCC, i looked up in big robbins, and it explains hairy leukoplakia as Patchy leukoplakia like this question says, and it says that its frequently is superimposed by candiadal infection, so now i am just confused.....??

i read or heard somewhere that you couldn't make a diagnosis of leukoplakia without a biopsy... i would pick candida cuz it is much more common than scc, or can you just assume scc cuz it's a firm solid lesion???
