i keep hearing that there're two different version of step 1: a primarily path/pharm one with easy pharm qs and a immuno/mol.bio one with a lot of pharmodynamics/kinetics and difficult micro.

do you think this is true, or is it just perception? i was thinking, perhaps the "immuno/mol.bio" one with a lot of hard or unusual questions has a bunch of experimental qs on it (don't they say 10-15% of the exam is experimental?).

  #2

I find this a very interesting issue. does anybody know more about this?

  #3

i don't think there's a difference. there may be more immuno/molbio than expected, but not that much overall.

path pretty much incorporates everything abnormal so no matter what over 50% of your test will be path-ish.

Like I said in my experience post, I feel like it's all chance. They wrote so many hundreds (I guess thousands) of questions, and randomly placed them into blocks, which you are randomly assigned. My test had little biochem, lots of what I thought was physio (probably more pathophysio then pure physio), little pure path, and lots of molecular biology. Let me say that I am a post doc in a molecular virology lab, and that's what I do all day long, and one or two of the questions I didn't have a clue. I asked my prof (MD/PhD from Stanford) and he said the questions were using outdated terminology that was actually wrong. Seems hard to believe that they would place questions like that on the test. You know, I'm not really sure that they really tested me on anything other than pathophysio, physio, and mol biology. I had a few questions on anat (less than 10?), very few micro (mostly virology), lots of behavioral science (no DSM-IV or child development something I was cramming up on the last minute). Little embryology and pharmac. Or maybe my memory is cloudy and I only remember what I missed or thought was odd. There must have been a lot more questions than what's coming to mind. I did sit there for 7 hours after all!

I'm going to make it my life's mission now to work for the USMLE and figure out what the heck they are doing up there!

hi
i was very unlucky to get mol bio version. very little of pathology

I have heard from a Kaplan representative that there is usually a bank of about 3000 questions that are pulled. She wasn't clear whether this was done randomly, or with some algorithm that gave you x number of Path, y number of Pharm, etc.

The goal is to study all the material, since doctors are supposed to know everything, right? grin

  #7

that's weird... there is that general guideline in the usmle bulletin that they should follow. of course it's possible to integrate mol bio with path, so that would still fall within the guidelines.

did you do goljan audio, retroviridae?

  #8

no goljan audio. I officially did Kaplan video, but gave up on them as they were just repeating what was in the notes and I didn't have the time.

  #9

I am listening to Dr Goljan...he is really superb. He clears concept in a very good manner..and he touches every subject.Because of that i am doing it in my last few days also.
But as u r stressing so much on Goljan audio..is it that its not just whatever benifits i think....but also u think listening is more better than reading? Is it that ,if i have sourses i should listen rather than reading?I have done all studies from kaplan...in this case i can listen to kaplan also besides Goljan.Of course for other subjects.
What do u say?

  #10

Of course,it will take more time ,isn't it? sad

  #11

hey docarjun,

i was stressing listening to goljan rather than reading him bc i think it's more efficient. i think it's actually faster and easier to learn the concepts through his audio than looking at a book. but that all depends on how you respond to his audio. like i said i'm not an auditory learner, but i found listening to him so much better than reading. even the audio was better than merely going through the 100pp for me bc it stuck in my brain.

normally i would say read rather than listen, but in this case listening is better than reading, esp. bc it's concept oriented and not fact oriented.

  #12

ok...i got ur point.
i am listening to goljan only.
i was just wheather to listen others or not
Thanks.....listening goljan is useful to me also.Actually i dont have his written notes.I am just listenin to him..and have made some notes myself.
