The answer given was Herpes...but I thought herpes causes enchephalitis instead of meningitis?? Isn't lymphocytic meningitis more common due to mycobacterium?

viral meningitis is acute lymphocytic meningitis and TB meningitis is chronic one in which you would expect an increase of not only lymphocytes, but also plasma cell, fibroblast and macrophage.

HSV can cause meningitis as well (esp. HSV-2). Bluestar, can you give a reference for your statement? Is there any other reason for the distinction; I'm not too clear on whether HSV or tuberculous meningitis would be more common.

sure, it's written as an explanation to a quesion of kaplan's Qbank. I am not sure, but I'd guess that TB is more common that HSV meningitis. also, HSV causes encephalitis more than meningitis? In the textbook I read, mumps, echovirus and coxsakievirus is the top 3 causes of viral meningitis.

Yeah, HSV does seem to cause more encephalitis than meningitis... Is there anyone else who can resolve this?
