Hi,

FA ( 2009 ed, p.143) says that shiga-like toxin is encoded by lysogenic phage . Is not that a mistake? I always thought that is plasmid encoded.

Also in FA is cholera toxin encoded in lysogenic phage, Kaplan says it is encoded in bacterial chromosome.

Who is right ?

Thanks

Wonder if anybody knows answer.

Wondersad , I remeber FA gives ABCDE for lysogenic bacteria.

both shiga toxin and cholera toxin are encoded by bacterial chromosomes (Chromosomal Encoded Somethings = Cholera, Endotoxin, Shiga toxin )

phage coded toxins' pnemonic is OBED (bacteriae pregnant with viruses )--

O Ag of salmonella
Botulinum toxin
Erythrogenic toxin of s.pyogens
Diphtheria toxin

Other toxins and Multiple drug resistance -- Plasmid

source--kaplan micro

GG, today I did review of Micro basic chapter and dwyt states thay give "OBED" and also states "plasmids carry many genes for antibiotic resistance and most bacterial exotoxins"

Looks like FA has the latest info! Check this new publication out.

iai.asm.org/cgi/content/ful...790&resourcetype=HWFIG

"The bacteriophage-encoded Shiga toxins (Stxs) are believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of hemorrhagic colitis, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura that may result from human infection with lysogenic Escherichia coli (8). Stxs are A-B-type toxins which bind to the host glycolipid Gb3 (11)"
