There are a lot of signs indicated for unresectable lung cancers, two of them are:

1) split-lung test tital volume < 800 ml,
2) tumor classification of M1 within 3 months

I don't understand what is "split-lung test" and significance of 800ml; also if tumor classification of M1, why must within 3 months?

Please help

Hi,

I think by split lung test it meant taking each lung separately into account and measuring tidal volume  i may be wrong here.

about M1 tumor classification ](*,) ..don't know

thanks a lot, asmi! take care!

Hi

well the split lung test is done to determine the contribution of tidal volume by each lung, so after removal of the affected lung the remaining lung must have the tidal volume of atleast 800ml otherwise the person become criple. so as to avoid this condition, this is done for resectable tumor.

thanx

what is the normal tidal vol? isn't it 500ml? and 880 ml from one lung isn't it astronomical? or am i lost?? please clarify

Normal tidal volume is 10ml/kg.

The way I remember it, it was like this:

It's a three step process:

1: Is total capacity over 2000 ml? If no go on to 2.....

2: By nuclear scan, is remaining lung's capacity over 800ml? If not go on to 3......

3: By briefly ligating the pulmonary artery to the (soon to be) resected lung), does the vascular bed on the remaining lung expand to over 800 ml? This last test is rarely done and only on the borderline cases.

800 ml can take a pneumonectomy
600 ml can take a lobectomy
