Hi I just finished my first yr in med school and have the summer off bt 1 and 2 yrs. I don't take step 1 until June 2005. I have 4wks after 2nd yr finishes before I take step 1. Should I wait to start preparing then? Would it be helpful to review over the summer what I just did in my 1st year? Thanks for any advice

probably not terribly helpful. there's not that much from first year that you get tested on that you can't memorize quickly, provided you *understand* everything from first year. just wait till later. for now, i recommend buying first aid and start taking notes in it. it'll help in learning the broad concepts and important facts second year, and you'll be fully familiar with the format by the time you start studying for the boards. some review books (neuro made ridiculously simple, brs path, pathophys for boards and wards) might help throughout the year, too. the best thing to do for the boards is study hard 2nd year and learn the concepts well so that you won't have to learn things for the first time when you're studying for step 1. from personal experience, it's time consuming. good luck!

i don't think it's ever 'too early' to prepare for these boards. while doing serious prep right now may not be warranted at your stage, it doesn't hurt to keep yourself familiar with what you've done do far. and as nuprin said, pick up a copy of first aid (never too early to have a ccpy of this in my opinion) and start going through it and making notes as you go along. this will help reinforce what you've already done, and help familiarize yourself with what's to come. and as nuprin also said, understand all the concepts as you do them while taking the courses. it will make your prep a lot less arduous once you start. will end up being a refresher rather than having to learn all over again. best of luck!
