Kaplan Qbank USMLE

hey guys,

i'm taking my test on the 22nd, and, like most people at my school, have taken 5 wks to study. i haven't been much of a studier throughout med school, though i did okay in my classes.

since i did just "okay" i would really like to do well on step 1 to make up for my mediocrity. suprisingly to me, i have actually been disciplined and have been able to study. i've been putting in 12-16 hours a day so i can keep up with my schedule. haven't burned out yet, but i'm started to get scared.

what if all this work doesn't pay off? i've never studied so much for anything in my whole life, including the mcat and every med school test. i'm starting to realize that i keep forgetting important stuff in biochem and anatomy bc i studied them first. my plan is to finish path tomorrow, start pharm sunday, take a full length monday, do pharm (first aid) for four days until friday, then read over all of my fully annotated first aid, do both nbme's, and, if i have time, do the goljan 100pp. from saturday till monday.

is this realistic? i'm also wondering if i have been spending too much time on the minor stuff (like the stuff in brs path that only gets two lines), writing them into my FA, when i should be starting my comprehensive review and be focusing on the big stuff, like the stuff that's already in FA.

bf starting path, i had been getting 65-70% on random kaplan qbank qs (with an occasional 50% here and there; i'm taking new and missed). i usu. get 80-90% when i take a subject exam immediately after i study it, but find i have forgotten a lot of it now.

anyway, advice would be appreciated, esp. concerning whether or not i should even bother with the minor stuff. i'm soooo tempted to delay my test so i'll have time to listen to the goljan lectures and do all the robbins questions but all the advice i've heard is not to delay it and 22 is my lucky number. smiling face

thanks!!!!

You seem to be quite dedicated and you will really do well. The reason I am saying this is on the basis of your qbanks score and sticking to standard recommended books.

Putting 12-16 hours for 5 weeks is not a joke and if you maintain this routine, you can easily get above 90. And about that minor stuff, I would say, you can care for those details because anything and everything in First aid is important. Adding something from BRS is I would advice not to do at this moment. Atleast dont waste time in that. You should stick to BRS Patho at this moment and I hope your are done with simulated tests. If any test is remaining, you should do them within 2 days.

Then, the last week is the key week and you should put your best but cool effort in a tension free environment. How about finishing First Aid everyday once and a subject review too?
And a walk every evening helped me.
Hope it helps

thanks, doctorjha, that's great advice. i'm scheduled for the 22nd, but i might delay it till the 25th just so i can have some more review time. i've only done less than half the qbank, and i've nms to do, too. plus, i'd really like to finish listening to the goljan lectures, bc i find they're really helpful!

right now i'm going through the robbins review questions and it's taking forever, but it's really wonderful. i'm getting a great review of biochem, micro, and genetics with it. so you think you can go through first aid once every day? i tried to read it once through the first day (i scheduled one day for this) but only got halfway through. i might go through it faster now that i'm more familiar with the stuff.

thanks again!
