why should it take so long- though I never tried it but maybe 3-4 mins max- ask about orientation to time , place, person, ask him to name 3 objects, ask if he subtract 7 from 100 and so on, ask him to recall the 3 objects shown earlier, and ask him to draw a complex figure. oh ya also to follow one command. but u know what , if a case requires that u do a MMSE, I dont think u need to do any other exam in detail- what say? do let me know what u think of it, auroville99

thanks for replying. i have never done the mmse either. I was quoting the textbook of physical diagnosis by swartz which says it takes 10 min. i was concerned that the scoring system for mmse is pretty specific /30 points. orientation year season date day month each 1 pt state county town hospital floor each 1 pt registration immediate memory of 3 named objects 1 pt each record no. of trials required to learn all three attention and calculation serial 7's . 5 pts recall again ask for above 3 objects 1 pt each language name a pencil and watch 2 pts repeat a sentence 1 pt follow a 3 stage command 1 pt each read and obey a written sentence 1 pt write a sentence 1 pt copy design 1 pt i guess maybe an ophthalmoscopy and gen exam would be reqd along with it, but lots of things to ask in history .

Although Schwartz is a very good book it isn't for CS ... Neurologic cases require examinig the cranial nerves, motor and sensory, as well as DTRs, Babinski ... if you do half of the MMSE presented above there will be no time to finish the rest of it. What if you have a loss of consciousness case where you have to do a complete neuro, CV and lungs exam? My MMSE for neuro cases: orientation to time, place, and person, memory (immediate recall and delayed - ask patient to remember 3 objects immediately and after 2-3 min; I wrote them down on the paper to make sure I will remember them with all that exam stress), attention and concentration (spell WORLD backward - serial 7 it's too time consuming), language (ask patient to name 2-3 objects in the room), and obeing comands (ask patient to close his eyes). Hope this helps.

For CS you don't need to give a MMSE score, if this is what you're asking. Just write the findings like patient alert/stuporous/lethargic and oriented to place, time and person/patient disoriented to time and place but oriented to person, recent and remote memory are intact/are not intact, attention and concentration intact/impaired by spelling WORLD backward/ or serial sevens (if you have time to do serial sevens) speech is fluid/pressured/slow and goal directed/tangential The boldface are normal findings. GL!
