or even get close to it. my work today

50 Q goljan Qs (still haven't finished the explanations)

2 hrs goljan audio

and about 4 hours of midday napping.

I can't believe how slow i am, so close before the test. STILL haven't read FA pharm..when am i going to read that???? i wanted to take the brs phys test in the back tomorrow. i don't if i'll have time. i also wanted to do the UCV micro .... but i NEED to memorize.

i still have to read HY BehSci so i can get those points....and immuno, so i can get some of those points..and FA rapid review...so i can get those points........man! it's craziness.

what i really need is to be more efficient. just 16hrs a day for 3 more days...of efficiency, and i can memorize the world, i feel like....i just need more time. but there's no more time.....

on the up side, goljan audio is fantastic. and the Qs reinforces what he says in lecture (they're identical to what he says pretty much). i hope that'll get me the rest of the way through path. i just gotta figure out something for phys and pharm.

80 hrs left.

about pharm eveyrday, and i'll post it here

phenytoin use dependent blockade of Na+ ch.
MOA close to carbamazepine
For all seizures except Petit mal (i think)
A. increased by chronic administration of carbamazepine
B. decreased by simultaneous administration of isoniazid
C. decreased by concurrent administration of disulfiram
No active metabolite
doesn't interact with phenylbutazone
accelerates hepatic degradation of the prednisone
Adv
1. macrocytic anemia (dec vit B12)
2. hepatosplenomegaly
3. folic acid deficiency
4. lymphadenopathy
5. Visual disturbances (such as "halos" on objects)
6. nystagmus
7. LFT gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP)
8. hirsutism
9. increased pituitary gonadotropin secretion
10. variable in absorption (along with carbamazepine)
11. fibrous hyperplasia
12. gingival hyperplasia
13. morbilliform skin rash
14. ataxia
15. behavioral changes
16. increased frequency of seizures
17. opthalmoplegia
18. diploplia
19. malignant hyperthermia (rare)
20. fetal hydantoin syndrome (teratogenic)

Wow...seizures must be reallly bad for them to use phenytoin. So basically, if you're on this drug, you're

hot, hairy, can't see, but when you do see you think your car is an angel, can't walk without falling, then you get tired, you got a rash all over you, big liver, big spleen, big gums, big lymphs, and on top of that, you can't give birth. plus, you can end up with more seizures than you started with...

seems like a bad deal to me!

i know the feeling, man. don't stress, but do prioritize and do what you can bc you can't do any more than that.

my suggestions:
do FA pharm!
UCVs very useful and interesting, but only do if you've got the time.
skip HY BehSci--FA is enough.
immuno is important.
FA rapid review--you'll know it all anyway, but it should take no more than an hour to get through.
make sure to cover the goljan 100pp. subjects other than path (bc you'll remember all the path from the audio). the pharm, phys, and micro are extremely useful. i'd prioritize this.

it always feels like not enough time, but when you get to the exam, trust me, you'll realize an extra few days won't matter much. i'm saying this as a tried and true last minute crammer.

wish i had done goljan qs. you'll really find that to be a timesaver. you know, if you do decide to drive over an hour to your exam, listen to the final goljan or two on the way (it's only 40 min, i think). it'll get you in the mode to think like the boards.

godspeed. :icon_salut:

  #126

that's awesome!! THANKS!! for the prioritizig...

i was totally oging to skp the 100 pages....but i'll do them now (except for path). scratch HY behsci...FA pharm. ok...i can do this. oooh...forgot about anatomy.....goodness.....ok...well, last minute sunday cram!

thanks Nuprin....always coming through, coming up with solns.

  #127

no sweat!

i see you're a night owl, too!

anyway, if you DO have the time and haven't done this yet, go over the pt-dr. ethics qbank qs. if you remember them all, or even most of them, don't sweat it.

  #128

unfortunately, that schedule doesn't work for medicine. so i've been trying to wean myself off...for this test. but i think i'm going to give in today and stay up af ew hours..i'm feeling pretty awake....so....

i'll try to do the patient-doctor relationship q., but there's 100..so i don't know.......maybe i can do like 50 quick ones....they should go by fast, right? .....alright......whew...so much to do...i just wish i could stay up for the next 24 hours and be awake, but i know i'm going to crash around 7, and i won't wake up til 5pm...

they should let us take the test at night if we want to...i think it's discrimination, damn it!

Hey Ahdy and Nuprin,

How are you guys...Ahdy, glad to see that you are going to cram in the FA pharm...that is my plan for later this week. for neuro and anatomy, are you sticking to FA or any other sources ? it hink at this point there is so little time, wouldnt even remember anything from HY books. maybe just look at the clinical info...

i was wondering where do you get the goljan q's? i am going to skim those 100 pgs. hopefully get something out of it.

today: going to squeeze in 2 goljan audios rite now, and go hit the FA anatomy section all day.
do you think it would be useful to try to look at some cts/mris before the big day... i'm trying to look for a quick radiology source....i'll let you know if i find anything

good luck!

  #130

Ahdy..another few days u r done with it..just keep going..!!

Just pray that u get those what u have learned so far...all the best!!

Sheffield..good luck for u too!!!

Sheffield and Kalsam. I don't know for neuro...i guess FA, and maybe look some stuff up in HY or MRS. The goljan qs i'm talking about are in the "rapid review for usmle 1" book. It comes with the cd, but the cd sucks (though there are 1000 qs on it). but everytime you click on a question, it spins, so you have to wait for it. it's not instantly. ... ..really very annoying. the other thing is you can't select q's you've done already. anyway...no time. i'm just doing the 350qs in the book. everybody is saying cts/mris/etcetcetc....i think webpath has good ct/mri's ...and they're not that many. the only hting is they're spread out in each subject. there's also that radiology link that was posted in the new link by DocArjun. see what you think. only thing is it doesn't have sagittal sections of brain..it's all transverse....so helps for strokes, etc. but not really for neuroanatomy. also for anatomy, make sure you know the knew from both the front view and the bakc view....for mcl/pcl/acl tears....i heard they play with your mind with that kind of thing.

good luck.

  #132

Hey Ahdy.....how many days left???? I thought you should be taking it by now..... but you are still here :P :P anyway.... you are more than ready to crack this thing!!!!!!!!! say that to yourself as many times as you can!
Go for it man.... don't get too tired before the test! You did enough now it's time to bring it out! The very best luck to you!
We are all here will be waiting for you!!!!!!
GO AHDY....GO AHDY.....GO AHDY!

i agree!!!! our schedules are NOT good for med school, but hopefully will come in handy during residency. there's always er! you sound exactly like me. for two years i struggled with trying to become a morning person and an early studier to no avail. i finally realized that i just had to do what worked best for me (even if that meant skipping some classes and being sleep deprived before a test). for me, no matter how much sleep i've gotten, i can stay up indefinitely and work best after midnight. getting up is another story.

for a week before my exam date i tried and tried and tried to reset my schedule to getting up at 6am and studying till 11pm or midnight. but that's difficult when i finally got to bed at 7-9am! finally i just decided it wasn't going to work. i got lots of sleep (slept in till 3pm) in the days prior and then two days before went to bed at 3am (which was a vast improvement!) and the night bf, well, i couldn't sleep, but my target was 2am... i'm used to functioning well on NO sleep bf an exam (we have 8 hour exams once a month) so 4 hours woulda been plenty!!

don't sweat the pt-dr. stuff if you don't have time. just make sure you know those principles laid out in fa (like first, do no harm, informed consent, always be honest unless it's detrimental to the pt, power of attorney trumps living will). i think this is one area in which american med students have a huge advantage bc it's intrinsically culturally biased. i found the usmle to be much easier than kaplan.

  #136

just did 50Q goljan....54%!!! wow...htat's intense. block was heavy in pharm and phys....i guess that tells me what i need to work on.

  #137

hi guys
finally i have some time to join the club and write about my exam preparation...
I planed to have my exam at the beginning of August, but not I am having some second thought..I took Kaplam simulation, and I took 50%, so I said to myself, maybe it would be better to just analyze and test my knowledge during these 3 weeks, and see what is going to happen. and then make a decision. I took that simulation after a week of going to sleep at 4 o'clock in the morning, -so I was very tired- but my goal was to see how I'll manage to keep up with the time. I knew from the beginning, that I won't get a great score, because lately I focused more on pathology and physiology and less on the other topics. so i am not very disappppointed, more I am decided to KEEP GOING and score GOOD. :icon_shake:
I made myself a schedule for the weeks ahead:
50-60 questions / day
10 pages of Goljan notes
2 hours of Goljan /day
rewieving Goljan question connected to the audios
rewieving every day the topics where I scored low, and where I think I'm week: pharma, immuno, genetics..and the FA connected to them
I also tryed to group my kaplan q banks on subjects, so I can review the cardio, renal etc questions all in one block and maybe make some generalizations, and draw some conclusiosn on more frequently tested topics.
on the last week and so I plna to review these grouped questions , goljan system audios and FA and GOljan mcq.
okay,
so good luck to us all :

  #138

i'm hoping my score increases inversevly to the decrease in hours.

1 hr goljan
1 hr FA pharm (like 4 pages)
20 behsci Qbank (a la Nuprin)

  #139

smiling face Hello ,
Wish you luck in your final Touches...
Trust me -Last minute reading -helps a lot! Though I haven't done the test yet- in few days to come...
We are in the same boat ! I have only 12 days left...
Today :I listened to Goljan He is GREAT !!! 1 hr Gyn 1, and then Cell Injury...
One thing though  -I heard they ask lots of Obs/Gynae thing nowadays. Please please take your time and read these at least 2-3 hours ...

Praying for you... [-o<

  #140

Thanks Jsmart. I need those prayers.

I've finished 25 Qs of explanations, and some rapid review. So far today, only four pages of FA pharm. I think there's soemthign mentally wrong with me.....i thikn maybe i feel like i'm learning a lot from the questions and that's enough....but i know it's not consciously. this is weird....maybe i'm just stressed and i don't know it
