What they are showing you is basically that they have found out is that too much or too little is not good, but for the best results, you have to be in the middle. For example, if you look at the graph, it shows that at low anxiety levels, the postoperative adjustment of people is very poor, even tho they have low anxiety, they did not adjust well to their state after surgery. Same is true for High anxiety people, but the best adjustment was when these people were moderately anxious, not too much not too little. Result - Its okay to be anxious moderately, but not to be too anxious or too little anxious.
