Methadone is a legal synthetic opioid, it is used to prevent withdrawal symptoms of heroin.It has longer duration of action.

I dont consider methadone to be having more addictive potential than heroin or similar products. ( which by the way is only my subjective view ) but methadone as said above has a longer duration of action and isused in the period of withdrawl symptoms.
