HOW CAN WE DEFINE THE POSITIVE SKEW AND NEGATIVE SCEW IN TERMS OF MEAN AND MEDIAN?

positive skew---- mean> median> mode
negative skew----mean<median<mode

THANX MASH.
BUT U KNOW I M CONFUSED B/C IN KAPLAN AUDIO HE TEACHER SAID THAT IN POSITIVE SKEW MEDIAN>MEAN.
AND IN NEGATIVE SKEW MEAN >MEDIAN
I DON'T KNOW WHY.
I HAVE NEW BOOKS,I DON'T KNOW WHY IN LECTURE THIS IS THE MISTAKE.

u r talking abt web prep, right?
even i remember dat he ha made this statement but its given clearly in lecture notes dat mean is greater than median in positive skew and vice versa in negative skew.......

in skewed curve , median is the best representative of central tendencies
in normal curve,mean is the best representative

well, in the normal curve, mean=median=mode, so either can be the best representative. Santaclara, I also noticed the obvious error the instructor made in the webprep lecture, that's why I came to find answers and found this post. :wink:
