For chronic CHF, can beta-blockers be used? how about digoxin?

  #2

Beta blockers are used for chronic CHF (not acute onset) as they upregulate the B receptor and increase contractility. Digoxin also would be used, I believe, in this case.

beta blockers (metoprolol and carvedilol) have been proven to decrease motality in CHF, and should never been given if patient is in active failure.

digoxin does not improve mortality in CHF, but does improve symtoms and decrease hospitalizations. (pt feels better but his days are numbered)
