can sulfasalzine cause digoxin/digitoxin toxicity by displacing digitalis from plasma protein?

it can bind to plasma proteins,as a matter of fact ALL Sulphanamides do. But what i know is that they bind to Bilirubin binding-site and therefore cause Jaundice and also displace MTX+Warfarin BUT i couldnt find Dig/Digi. if you read it somewhere let us know.

You would think it would, but I dont think sulfasalazine (or the sulfa part) is absorbed. Regadless the following drugs are noted for raising/lowering dig levels: INCREASE serum levels-Propafenone, quinidine, verapamil, amiodarone, erythro, tetracyline, omeprazole DECREASE serum levels-Cholestyramine, antacids, kaopectate, bran, sulfasalazine, neomycin (you will notics all the decreasers are oral meds that are not well absorbed)

thank you both for replying. but I don't get it why hard-to-absorbed drugs can decrease digoxin level? I only understand for antacid, the Aluminum ion will form insoluble complex with other drugs thus delay their absorption. then what about other drugs you mentioned, including sulfasalazine? also, what about sulfonamide other than sulfasalazine that can be absorbed? I mean their effect on digoxin ?

For most drugs that are given for GI conditions (all the ones mention) or that specifically bind things (cholestyramine) you will have decreased reabsorption of anything taken orally. I dont think it will actually lower blood levels of digoxin, but it will decrease your blood levels over time (due to decreased absorption).
