A 62-year-old man comes to see a psychiatrist for depression, which he has had since his wife died. He talks to the psychiatrist once a week for a year. At the end of the year, the patient thanks the psychiatrist for his help during a difficult time and says that he no longer needs the psychiatrist. As the psychiatrist says good-bye and good luck to his patient, he feels proud of himself. The feeling of the psychiatrist is what kind of gain?

Primary gain -- this is what the symptoms do for the patient's internal psyche
Secondary gain -- This is what the symptom(s) gets the patient (display of emotions etc.)
Tertiary gain -- This is what the caretaker gets (like an MD, on an interesting case)
