36 hours after surgical removal of a large parathyrodd adenoma, a 50y becomes irritable and developes hypocalcemia’signs, Ca 7.1 mg/dl, phosphorus 7.5 mg/dl, Magnesium 1.8 meq/l , What is the cause?

a. Atrophy of the following parathyoids
b. Hungry bone syndrome
c. Magnesium deficiency

Hungry bone syndrome doesn't have hypocalcemia although the bone increased use of calcium because the other parathyroud glands already recover from inhibited state; it usually occurs later than this case. The answer is A.

can u plz clear my doubt i always thought it to be hungry bone syndrome.after how much time does hungry bone syndrome occur?

ya tess i m also confused ,acc to kaplan hypocalcemia occurs in hungry bone syndrome

the answer is A. so better monitor Ca and albumin postop.

hungary bones syndrome occurs after about 1 week. a/w again temp increase in PTH wth normal/low Ca levels.
