I'm a non-traditional medical student. My medical school is located in West Africa. However, I'm doing my first 2yrs online. My school is the first medical school to offer this type of program. Nevertheless, I am made fun of on SDN and valuemd. Some call me wanna be medical student and other think that the medical school I attend is a fake or diploma mill. Regardless of what they think, I'm proud to be a medical student and have worked hard to get where I am. If anyone thinks that doing your first 2yrs online is nothing more than just sitting at your computer and playing around then they are sadly mistaken. The exams I take are 3 days and involve case studies which you have to know what your talking about. Thus, though I'm not attending a physical class 5 days a week. I have to study as long as any other traditional medical student. I mentioned that I was proud to be where I'm at and at times I wear my ID badge and that I have a license tag holder with my schools name on my car. They called me foolish and a wanna be medical student. Yet, how is this any different than if someone wears a sweatshirt or uses any other memorbilia with there schools name on it? I'm sorry for the long post, but, I am really hurt over this. Not only must I deal with being a foriegn medical school student, but I must also deal with people who think that I'm less competent then them. I guess this is something that I must prepare myself for because I'm sure that it will only get worse once I graduate and have to deal with people who will think that I'm less competent then them because they graduated from Harvard medical school. I can sure use some advice from other IMG's.

listen girl, get a hold of yourself. This is your life decision that u made to attend this school on-line. Every life decision comes with awareness that u have to deal with it. So deal with it! y do u care what other ppl think of u??? Unless u have some personal conflicts with your decision (I am hoping not) dont get bothered by other ppl's opinon. and dont get mad at them either, maybe they just dont know much bout it. Y dont u communicate with other students of your medical school who r doing this medical school on-line and in exact same situation as u, it will be more helpful as all of u are goin thru same stuff. And if u still wish to go to sites like this or other ones u mention, and u are not comfortable with critisism, no need to tell them where r u from, no need to give your whereabouts, u and them should be interested in communicating medical knowledge, not personal info. So gather yourself up and if u believe in what u do, dont get bothered by other ppl's opinon. I wish u courage and believing in yourself in every situation.

I think for the most part doctors are very inconsiderate, arrogant, have too much pride that hurts the patient at times, and think they are somewhere higher than other health professionals.. Newsflash* - Well they aren't - We all choose our profession for different reasons, no one profession should believe or act like they are better than another .. After all we are all just people .. Alot of them are not very professional at all.. I am really sick of seeing this in our profession.. I think doctors are this way because they learn from their superiors ( higher PGYs and Attendings who are their role models and treat people like crap (maybe they are overworked and stressed) and though many of them never planned to be assholes, they somehow just end up that way) Most other health professionals are more relaxed and down to earth and treat people with consideration.. There is too much bossing around within the profession (at least other professions have talked back to the attending/resident when need be, as Ive witnessed, and the MD deserved it for being an asshole! .. but the residents and students have to put up with it for the most part and I think alot of people end up believeing this is how their profession is so deal with it -- or they end up not having pride in their profession (notice how nurses and pharmacists have such a close bond and pride in their profession for the most part, SERIOUSLY) There is too much bossing around within the profession going on because medicine has a step ladder eg with the different PG levels, which is fine -- however, I think it should be more of an apprenticeship and not 'your below the ladder so you should do whatever I say' attitude -- where is the respect for a fellow docotor in training?.. and be considerate to others!! Especially patients though they can get irritating.. Be nice to people and you will realize your life will be more relaxed and comfortable in the long run! And you will feel good inside.. Sorry had to get that off my chest! Hope none of us turn out like alot of the MDs out there nowadays.. Never forget what it may feel like to be in the shoes of the person(s) u are interacting with. Oh and please try to write neat.. the chart is a legal document, not your personal diary, you owe it to the patients and your fellow healthcare workers.. =)

Hi, Can you please let me know what SDN stands for? Is there a web site for your school ? Forgive me for my ignorance. I think it will be advisable for medical students to clear USMLE while they are still in school . Good Luck with your studies. W.

SDN is "Student Doctor Network." www.studentdoctor.net ValueMD is a site for foreign med students. www.valuemd.com There are mostly US allopathic students on that site, and some D.O.'s as far as I can tell, but there are also some foreign grads also (including some of the moderators). As has been said before, we will all get criticism, whether now or later, and some of it will be unfair, and some of it will be deserved. You just have to learn how to handle it, and be able to learn from the constructive criticism, and brush aside the destructive criticism. This is the life we chose, and we have to deal with the consequences. Some schools will have stigmas attached to them (including mine, SGU), such as the one you attend because it is different (being that its basic sciences online). Just be confident, and do the best you can, and no one can fault you. Besides, there are plenty of students who hardly go to class, and learn mostly from reading at home. I don't see how this would be different from learning online (aside from anatomy labs, etc). So I don't have any animosity toward your school. Only thing I would suggest is contacting programs here in the US (if you plan to apply here for residency) as to whether they recognize your school or not. One friend of mine from Ross told me he went to an interview for medicine, and one of the faculty didn't have a clue what Ross (or SGU for that matter) were! So just keep this in mind when applying here (or anywhere). I wish you the best of luck in your career, and I hope we all acheive our goals in the future. Hasan

SDN members bash those of us that attend a Caribbean medical school, and ValueMD members bash those of us that do not attend/wish to attend Ross, Saba, AUC and SGU. Everyone bashes online basic sciences students and schools. I have experience with US medical school, and I can tell you, there is much bashing going on between the gunners and the non-gunners, the AOAs and the non-AOA, the minority students and the non-minority students...my point? It seems like human nature for folks to have certain insecurities, and those insecurities tend to stem into inferiority complexes. Given the competitive nature of premedical and medical studies, this is normal. Bashing tends to make one feel more superior. As future physicians, this should be evident to all. Rise above the BS, and focus on your goal. As for the question of how to learn gross anatomy online--after taking a semester of GA at a US medical school, I can assure you that it can be done. How? Like this---> http://www.med.umich.edu/lrc/coursepages/M1/anato... http://www.anatomy.wisc.edu/courses/gross/index.h... http://www.le.ac.uk/pathology/teach/va/titlpag1.h... And just so you know, cadaver dissection isn't all that it's cracked up to be. The prestigious UCLA school of medicine has done away with its gross anatomy lab---> http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,58733,00... I doubt that folks will start bashing their newly minted MDs for this change in direction. Best of luck to all of you pursuing your goals to become doctors!
