Kaplan Qbank USMLE

Hi,

First of all, I must thank this forum because I have got great help from this forum especially in pharma and BS.

About the exam: First of all I got a lot of patho but it was pretty staright forward and anyone who has done BRS or KAPLAN once could have easily answered those questions....got quite a lot of pharma as well....hypoglycemis, autonomics,

My advise to all those who r studying for STEP 1 that dont take very long and try to go over the same books over and over again...I made the same mistake, started studying in November and was planning to give it in April but then delayed it to May, however now I feel that if I had given it in April, wouldnt have made much of a difference...

Though I dont have my result yet....but the questions which r difficult....require a judgement call and I guess there is nothing much u can do about them...and the questions which r of medium difficulty, going over KAPLAN lecture notes or BRS twice is enough for them...plus we have been studying in Med School so dont just assume that u have forgotten everything, I remember in one pharma question that I got yesterday, I solved that only because of something I had heard in the lecture in 3rd yr....

Exam is pretty long....after 4 blocks u get a severe headache in the occipital area...I wonder if it happens to everyone cuz happened to two of my friends...so take some tylenol or coffee or something....time is not a problem for STEP 1.....hope the same was true for STEP 2 also...

Good Luck to all of you...will let u know when i get my result...

Regards,
Salman

Good luck. can u tell us what kinda genetics and biochem questions u got. Also did u get pharmacology and physio graphs? images, pedigrees? how helpful was First Aid? what bout goljan notes, did u use them, were they helpful? What kinda MCQs u used and which were more similar to the actual exam? thanks and good luck once again

  #5

Didnt get much genetics...and the questions which came were very very simple..like some simple mutation and all that...regular stuff...

Lots and lots of physio graphs....when u come across graphs in ur exam, pay special attention to the axis as to how they r labelled....cuz that makes a hell of a difference....and changes the shapes of the entire graph....

One or two pharma graphs, again not very difficult.....

One mitochondrial pedigree and asked me a simple question related to mit inherited disease....

I guess first aid is really good if u give it a reading in the middle of ur prep and the last one week....it covers nearly everything....now when I look at first aid after giving my exam, about 60 % of the qs r from first aid....rest of them was pure judgement call....

I did Kaplan Q bank....very helpful.....and in the last one month, usmleasy.com.....cant say much about them....didnt do them too much...but if u wanna build ur confidence, go for Kaplan's one month MCQS....and then do Kaptest at the very end...I scored a 85 % so that really boosted my morale...cuz my friends told me that anything above 75 in kaptest is good....Lets see how the result turn out....

Hope this helps......

salman...u an akuite?

  #8

thanks salman for answering my questions. it was helpful. Good luck smiling face

may I ask about the extent of anatomy/neuro that was covered on your exam, and which resources did you use to prepare?
thanks.

  #10

yes, SK, I am an akuite....

The anatomy and neuroanatomy which came was pretty simple....very good quality MRIs and u had to identify simple structures....simple X rays and easy questions with them.....not much of neuroanatomy...I guess about one or two.....over all, I guess from Anat/neuroanat.....10 questions overall of which 8 were very easy .

Salman

Thanks perses, I will tell u when my scores are here....thanks again for praying...

Walaikum famz,

well many people from my class directed their result to an address in USA and it took 4-5 weeks....what you should do is, go to oasis.ecfmg.org and check whether they have dispatched ur result....Usually when the screen shows that they have dispatched ur result, ur friend in Philly will receive it within 3-4 days....Unlukcy for us, those ppl who gave their exam after 26th May, their result has been delayed, I wonder if ur result has been affected by the same delay but I guess you should get it within the next week....

Take care,
Salman

hi peeps..
I had never heard of this site, but i recently got an email thru a friend about it.. I was browsing thru and liked it enough to post smiling face.. okay so I am taking my exam on the 22nd but i think im freaking out.. like totally.. Could someone please direct me to a good/ useful post (s) like this one by someone who recently took the exam?

thanks smiling face

Did the NBME stuff help??

  #17

nah, dont know much about the NBME stuff...just used the regular KAPLAN books and Q book and Q bank....Tell u what, if you do KAPLAN thoroughly and BRS pathology plus Q book and Q bank, I think its more than enough...the rest is then ur judgement call and ur luck....

Two more of my friends gave the exam yesterday, unfortunately they are not on this forum but one of them got quite a lot of genetics and the other one got a lot of pathophysiology...so the exam varies everyday so u gotta study everything in detail.

Take care,
Salman

cool.. thanks for the reply.. smiling face how about the High Yiel for USMLE by Goljan.. i like that.. anyway, i only have like two weeks left so cant really change my study strategy so late in the game.. i actually didnt take kaplan.. i have the books but i wasnt comfortable with them.. so im basically doing qbank, BRS and FA and more Qbank.. hope this works out inshAllah. thanks again.
