Are there any older IMG's out there preparing to take step 1, or just finished taking step 1 who can give some words of wisdom?

  #2

Fantastic! grin Good luck and hope you max out.
My biggest fear is that I have forgotten so much that a "review" won't be sufficient.
I would appreciate hearing what you greatest difficulties were while preparing for the exam.
Did you review from text books, do a home study course or a kaplan center course?
How many months did you set aside to study?

I graduated in 1988.
I am taking USMLE 1 in September 2004.

I am a 1996 graduate. Immigirated to USA recently. Took step 1 and passed it in first attempt (86 score).
Nowdays studying for step 2. I am a full time employee and my work is not exactly Medicine related but still managing to achieve my goals.
It's very hard work but definitely doable.
Go USMLE :-)

It would be nice to hear your reasons for taking the USMLE. Maybe it will help me focus. :|

Let me define what an "Older IMG" is, someone who completed medical school more than 10 years ago OR is older than 50 years when they take usmle.

  #11

I have a friend in California... also an IMG and is reviewing in Kaplan. She said that a lot of her classmates from Kaplan review were over 40y/o and a lot graduated from medical school in the 1980s. She said almost all of them were still able to find residency.

My friend... just like me is also an IMG of batch 1998. These classmates of her are the reason why she never gave up hope. I feel that way too. I hope... that I gave HOPE to every IMG in this forum.

One time... I almost gave up. But I said to myself... that I'd rather go for the USMLEs and the match (whether I fail or succeed overall) than not to pursue a career as a doctor in US. One day I'll be very old and I don't wanna look back with regrets that I did not even try at all. Good luck to all IMGs. grin

Hello! Good luck and congratulations for your effort!
I'm not an old IMG, i have already taken step 1, step 2 and i'm going for the CSA this month. I have good chances to get matched on 2005 match.
My boyfriend, whom i'm planning to marry with next year, is an old IMG, he graduated on 1983, and is a pediatrician-neonatologist and have been working all these years in the dept of neonatology in a big hospital in my country. He is planning to take the steps to follow me and became a doctor in the USA. I wonder, if he perform well on the usmle, how difficult is it to get interviews and to be matched?? In the USA nobody can discriminate you for reasons like gender, religion, race, and also AGE, but how true is it?? Do someone of you know experiences from other old IMG that already matched?? I'm afraid because I don't want him to do such a big effort and later be discriminated and feel disappointed.
Somebody give me a light please!
