G1...the cell cycle is arrested in G1 while p53 scans the DNA for damage. If it can be fixed, it is, if not, then p53 activates the apoptosis gene, bax. All the while, the RB suppressor gene is holding onto the cyclin D/CDK 4 complex. When p53 is phosphorylated, the cell cycle can continue.

mismatched bases r missed by proofreading function of DNA polymerase during S phase these r recognized by proteins ka hMLH & hMSH which remove these bases in G2 phase HNPCC is one condition where these mismatched bases r not repaired
