Which of the following is directly involved in sound transduction? A. Release of neurotransmitter onto the afferent endings of cranial nerve VIII B. Shearing motion of the basilar membrane against hair cell stereocilia C. Movement of the tectorial membrane resulting in hair cell depolarization D. Equalization of the pressure in the middle ear and nasopharynx by the Eustachian tube E. Vibration at the round window via the stapes

I will go with C, because stercocilia does not directly face the basilar mem

I think the answer is B. The stereocilia are embeded in the tectorial membrane. But it is the vibration of the more elastic basilar membrane that pushes the hair cells against the TM causing de/hyperpolarization.

ans is A ext ear --collection of sound waves(mech energy) middle ear--transmission of sound waves inner ear---mechano neuronal transduction The cilia of the hair cells, which contact the overlying tectorial membrane, bend as the basilar membrane vibrates, this opens ion channels and causes the entry of ions into the hair cell and a generator potential develops. If large enough, the generator potential causes transmitter release from the hair cells which excites the afferent nerve. so, it is this NT release dat is directly involved in sound conduction.
